In everyday life, baking soda is a common multipurpose product widely used in cooking, cleaning, deodorizing, and more. However, there are many counterfeit baking soda products on the market, which may contain harmful ingredients. So, how can we distinguish real baking soda from fake without professional testing instruments?

Appearance Judgment:
Baking soda is a fine crystalline powder. Real baking soda should have a fluffy texture, good flowability, and no dusty residue. Fake baking soda is often filled with sodium sulfate or industrial salt. While it may appear fluffy, it tends to have a dusty feel and can produce dust when handled. Thus, you can make an initial judgment based on the appearance of the baking soda.
Density Comparison:
Baking soda has a relatively low density. In the same volume, real baking soda should be more compact than fake baking soda. When purchasing baking soda, you can compare equal weights to see which fills the container more fully. For example, a 25kg bag of real baking soda will appear fuller than a bag of fake baking soda, which may not fully fill the bag despite weighing the same.

Taste Test:
Real baking soda, when dissolved on the tongue, goes through a progression of flavors: slightly salty, salty, alkaline, and bitter. Fake baking soda, often mixed with a lot of salt, will taste much saltier, sometimes excessively so. Therefore, taste can be used as a preliminary test to identify real baking soda.
Water Solubility Observation:
When added to water, real baking soda dissolves quickly. If the product is fake and filled with sodium sulfate, you may notice insoluble crystals at the bottom after dissolving. However, if salt is used as a filler, it will dissolve completely, making this method less reliable alone. It’s best to combine water solubility tests with other methods.
Vinegar Test:
Adding baking soda to vinegar should cause rapid bubbling if it is real. Fake baking soda will produce fewer bubbles. Therefore, the vinegar test provides a straightforward way to distinguish between real and fake baking soda.
