Baking soda, as an electrolyte and pH regulator, is widely used by many farmers because it is inexpensive, readily available, and has significant feeding effects. When mixed with feed, it helps prevent or alleviate the drop in rumen pH. This is primarily due to the consumption of large amounts of acidic foods like distillers' grains and silage, which produce a lot of stomach acid. Baking soda helps regulate this, making the feed easier to digest and improving its palatability. For example, feeding beef cattle with 0.5% baking soda can shorten the feeding period by 50 days, increase body weight to 680-700 kilograms, improve feed utilization by 12%, and increase the acetate to propionate ratio in the rumen, thereby boosting milk fat percentage and milk production.

It is important to note that baking soda should not be fed to cattle alone. It should be evenly mixed into concentrate or roughage. Typically, dairy cows can consume 80-150g per day, while beef cattle can consume 80-100g per day. During storage, it is important to keep it dry. Since baking soda is an alkaline substance, it should not be used together with acidic drugs like vitamin C, penicillin, and oxytetracycline to avoid rendering the drugs ineffective.
