Therefore, most factories need to adjust the pH value before discharging wastewater.

The optimal pH value for wastewater treatment largely depends on the treatment process and discharge limits. For direct discharge, the effluent pH should be between 6.0 and 9.0 to protect the receiving water body. For indirect discharge, the effluent pH should be between 5.5 and 10.0 to avoid corrosion of municipal pipelines and ensure stable operation of sewage treatment plants. If the wastewater treatment process includes biochemical treatment, the influent pH for biological treatment units should be between 6.5 and 8.5. For biological treatment units involving nitrification, the optimal pH is between 7.5 and 8.5 (this pH range is typical for biochemical treatment processes, and other processes may still perform well outside this range). Additionally, the optimal pH value may vary with temperature, process type, and technology.
Acidic wastewater entering the sewage system can undergo chemical reactions that produce harmful substances. For instance, the reaction between cyanide in wastewater and acidic wastewater generates highly toxic hydrogen cyanide. Sulfides in wastewater reacting with acidic wastewater produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which is also toxic. Both hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide are extremely hazardous even at low concentrations. Moreover, hydrogen sulfide can oxidize to form sulfuric acid, which severely corrodes concrete and metal pipelines.
