Corrosion Mitigation for Municipal Water Systems
Controlling metal pipe corrosion in municipal water systems is a major concern for local drinking water suppliers. Meeting EPA standards for allowable lead and copper in potable water is critical, not just from a health point of view, but also from the perspective of operational cost efficiency.
While bicarbonate alkalinity is natural to most water supplies, some water can be deficient due to corrosion by acid rain or other causes. Supplementing waters with ARM & HAMMER™ Alkalinity First™ can help restore the alkalinity level to 30 – 40 mg/L as CaCO3 (and optimum pH between 7.5 and 8.5), and can help reduce corrosion by creating a thin, tenacious, carbonate coating on the interior of lead and copper pipes. This coating effectively seals interior surfaces from water corrosion, and significantly reduces the leaching of metals.
